President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sacked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu from office.
The IGP was asked to proceed on leave following an establishment by a 20 member committee set up by the vice president to investigate his involvement in letting the cedi out of jail.
The reason for the sack was announced by the president during a brief press conference at the Jubilee house. It was established that the IGP took an amount of GHc 400,000 from the U.S Ambassador to Ghana to let the Cedi out of jail.
“The cedi has appreciated in value. When we came in, it was running, essentially we arrested it, and the IGP has the key to where it’s locked up” Dr. Bawumia asserted when he addressed a gathering to mark one hundred days in office by the NPP in April 2017.
Now the rate of the dollar is at a record high against the Cedi and sources say the IGP played a major role in letting the cedi which was under lock in his care getting out.
“Now it’s out onto the street where it’s causing serious harms to the economy” Bawumia added.
